The Takayama Jinya is the only remaining original Governor / Magistrate's office from the Edo Period (1603-1867, 江戸時代, Edo-jidai). Built in 1692, it served as the local government office through the Edo Period until Modern Japan in 1969 when the government office was relocated.
Today, the building has been preserved and restored to its original appearance, and offers an insight into what a governor or magistrate's office would have looked back in the day.
Takayama Jinya's Story
The exact date of construction of Takayama Jinya is not known. The building was originally the shimo-yashiki (下屋敷, Daimyo's Residence) of the Kanamori Clan (金森家, Kanamori-ke), who were the local daimyo (大名, Feudal Lords) that ruled Hida Domain (飛騨藩, Hida-han) in the early years of the Edo Period (1603-1867, 江戸時代, Edo-jidai).
In 1692, the Tokugawa Shogunate (徳川幕府, Tokugawa Bakufu) took over direct control of the Hida Domain, shifting the seat of government from Takayama Castle (高山城, Takayama-jo), which was demolished in 1695, to what is now Takayama Jinya. The exact reason for why the Tokugawa Shogunate decided to take direct control of the region is unknown, however the most popular theory is that the region was rich in resources, especially timber.
