Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

World's 2nd Longest Suspension Bridge

The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is the world’s second longest suspension bridge (it was the longest from 1998 until 2022), and is one of the three bridges that connect with the island of (四国, Shikoku). Spanning 4km long, and 50m above the water, the bridge also hosts the Maiko Marine Promenade, which lets you explore the underside of the bridge.

The Maiko Marine Promenade is a series of of walkway observatories that allow you to observe the usually unseen interior architecture of the underside of a bridge. It is accessible via an elevator from the Kobe side of the bridge.

At the base of the bridge, you can also find the Bridge Exhibition Center which has various exhibits and models regarding the bridge and its construction. It’s an interesting look to see how such a massive piece of architecture gets built. There are some basic English translation for displays, but much of it remains only in Japanese.
