Kobe Chinatown

Famous for its Nikuman & Peking Duck Rolls

Nankinmachi, also known as Kobe Chinatown, is one of Japan’s three Chinatowns, alongside Yokohama Chinatown and Nagasaki Chinatown. The area consists of a wide variety of Chinese restaurants, supermarkets and shops, with plenty of street food including and Rolls.
Nankinmachi mainly consists of two main streets where most of the shops are clustered along, and they intersect in a large plaza with a Chinese-style gazebo. There are also three Chinese-style gates that mark the entrance of Nankinmachi: Chang’an Gate (長安門) in the east, Xi’an Gate (西安門) in the west, and Nanlou Gate (南樓門) in the south. It’s a great place to explore on foot, and grab some street food as you walk around.

Kobe Chinatown's Story

Nankinmachi was established in 1868 when Japan opened up to foreign trade after centuries of national isolation from other countries. The port of Kobe saw a large influx of migrants from the Guangdong and Fujian provinces of China, who settled down on what was the western side of Kobe’s foreigner district.
Eventually, enough Chinese migrants started concentrating around the area that it was named Nankinmachi after the then Chinese capital of Nanjing (南京, Nankin in Japanese). By the 1920s, the area was a bustling hub for the local Chinese community.
Today, Nankinmachi serves as more of a tourist attraction than an actual community for the Chinese migrants.
