Great walkable district to eat and shop
Atmospheric streets filled with traditional machiya
The Higashiyama District is one of the best places to feel as if you’ve been taken back to old Kyoto. The streets are lined with traditional machiya (町家, Traditional wooden townhouse) on both sides, filled with bustling shops that evoke the atmosphere of an area that has been serving merchants and visitors for centuries.
The recommended route is by walking from the southern exit of Maruyama Park, behind Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社, Yasaka-jinja), and following along a 2km long route through the district that will take you up to Kiyomizudera Temple (清水寺, Kiyomizu-dera).
Must Visits in Higashiyama
One of the best spots to check out are the alleys of ninenzaka (二年坂, lit. two year slope) and sannenzaka (三年坂, lit. three year slope). Apart from the great historic atmosphere that you get out of these beautifully preserved streets (and the great photo spots), you can also find some really interesting shops lining these streets.

Said to be founded in 780, Kiyomizudera was named after the Otowa Falls whose site the temple was built on.
