Off-the-beaten path walking destination
Great place to unwind and take in the river breeze
Gently stroll along the path, or take a seat along the riverbed
One of the best ways to unwind in Kyoto is by walking along the Kamo River. While many always associate Kyoto with the bustling tourist crowds of Higashiyama, Gion, and the temples across Kyoto, walking down the Kamo River bring a nice, quaint change of pace.
Along the large Kamo River the cuts through Kyoto, you can find the Kamogawa Noryo-Yuka (鴨川納涼床), a dirt path, that runs alongside the river, just outside the bustling restaurants of Pontocho. The path also has a grassy slope that leads down to the riverbank, and is faintly illuminated by the lights of the nearby restaurants. There’s a certain sense of calm to be had in the area, with lies just outside the bustle of the nearby restaurants in the area. It’s typically quiet, and you’ll often find friends or couples sitting along the grassy slopes, staring across the river, or up into the starry sky.
As you walk further down the river, away from the hustle and bustle, the lighting gets more faint, and the area becomes quieter, and is a great place to be as the gentle river breeze blows through your hair. There are also often cranes in the area, giving you a sense of peaceful nature in this old capital. While the lighting might be dim, the path is generally a straight, flat dirt path, illuminated well enough by the surrounding buildings, and the safety of Japan means that it’s perfectly safe to just stroll along.
Kamo River Review and Thoughts
Recommended
Strolling down the Kamo River at night might actually be our favourite activity in Kyoto, and what we think is its best kept secret. Unlike most areas of Kyoto that are overflowing with tourists, there's a sense of quiet serenity as you walk down the Kamo River riverside. It's an extremely surreal type of atmosphere, because the riverside walk itself is rather quiet, but it's also just out of reach of the bright lights and noisy chatter of the restaurants right beside it. Letting you enjoy the residual energy of the area around, while also not being overwhelmed with the sheer amount of people.
It's an extremely understated activity that few foreigners ever undertake. You're more likely to find local couples and friends sitting by the riverside, having a few drinks, or just staring out into the river chatting, than to find throngs of tourists in the area. And to us, that's part of the charm. There's not much that can be said about the experience, other than recommending that you try it for yourself.
Bonus Tip: The riverside dirt path along the Kamo River actually stretches pretty far, and when you get to the quieter portions, you might even spot some tsuru (鶴, Japanese Crane) standing right beside you along the river. It's a pretty amazing encounter, and one of the few places that you can actually see real wildlife hiding in the shadows of this loud and bustling city.
