Former Railway Track Famous For Its Sakura

The Keage Incline has in recent years captured the attention of visitors as a great viewing spot that is off-the-beaten path and away from Kyoto’s large crowds. This 582m inclined slope begins near the entrance to Kyoto City Zoo and runs all the way up to the current Keage Station on the Kyoto Subway Tozai Line.
It’s a great area to walk and take in the view, as you walk along the tracks of this former railway.

Keage Incline's Story

The Lake Biwa Canal was initially built in order to bring water and cargo in from into Kyoto. Along this route, however, there was a large elevation difference that made it difficult for cargo ships to transport goods.
As such, an incline railway was built in 1890 to carry boats between the two waterways across 582m and up an elevation of 36m. This railway was the longest incline railway in the world when built, and operated up till 1948 when the canal stopped being used for cargo.
