Meidai Omen's Unique Points (こだわり, Kodawari)

Omen uses stock made from , and from (北海道, Hokkaidō) for a deep and rich taste.
The wheat for the udon is specially sourced domestically in Japan for a strong flavor, as well as smooth and chewy texture. When making noodles, the amount of water, salt, and resting of the dough is constantly changed throughout the year to adapt to the season of the wheat, in order to bring out the optimum taste and texture.
No chemical additives or preservatives are used in the shop. Omen also runs their own small-scale farm in order to grow new ingredients to develop new dishes.
The locations of each shop are also specially selected in order to allow visitors to enjoy this traditional cuisine alongside visits to the historic sites of Kyoto.

Meidai Omen's Story

The shop’s name is a tribute to the owner’s hometown of Isesaki in Gunma Prefecture.
As a local dialect, the Japanese word gomen (ごめん, a casual form of sorry), got shortened to “omen” (おめん, pronounced “oh-men”). “Omen” is also a pun on attaching the honorable “o”-prefix to the word men (めん, noodles).
