The Philosopher’s Path is a stone-paved path under a canopy of trees that follows the Shishigatani Canal (鹿ケ谷, Shishigatani) from the Silver Pavilion (銀閣寺, Ginkaku-ji) to the Nanzen-ji Temple (南禅寺, Nanzen-ji) . This quiet path meanders through a rural neighborhood, and is a great place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Along the path, there are many small local shops and cafes, where you can rest your legs, and get a nice cuppa. Throughout the year, there are various flora and fauna that bloom along the path, most popular of which are the sakura (桜, Cherry-blossom) that bloom in spring.
The path got its name from Nishida Kitaro (西田 幾多郎), a philosophy professor from the nearby Kyoto University, who used to enjoy taking a meditative stroll along this very path on his way to and from work each day.
