Ek Chuah is a chocolatier that runs a chocolate-specialty cafe in their main shop at Karahori Len (からほり れん, Karahori Ren). Get plenty of chocolate-based desserts, and chocolate-based drink in this beautiful retro cafe. A wide variety of chocolates are available to choose from, including the sweeter milk chocolates, and the more bitter dark chocolates. You can even choose how thick you want your chocolate drinks, going as high as 3x thicker.
The cafe sits on the second floor of the building, while the first floor is a retail shop where you can buy fresh chocolates from an extensive display of refrigerated items like pralines, fresh chocolates, and more. Any of the items served on the first floor can also be consumed in the restaurant.
Ek Chuah's Unique Points (こだわり, Kodawari)
Couverture chocolate refers to a specific type of chocolate with a higher percentage of cocoa butter, around 32 to 39%, than regular eating chocolate. Couverture chocolate produces a stronger flavor and smoother texture, that makes it extremely suitable for making chocolate desserts like covering truffles or other candies.
Ek Chuah Review and Thoughts
Recommended
One of the best hidden gems in Osaka, it's popular amongst locals, but relatively unknown to foreign tourists. It's one of the best cafes to visit while in Osaka, as the retro cafe ambience of the second floor is one of the coolest places to chill after a long exploration of Osaka. No matter what type of chocolate you prefer, whether it be the sweeter milk chocolates, or the more bitter dark chocolates, Ek Chuah has both ends of the spectrum.
We personally really like the Ice Chocolate Drink, both the milk and the dark version are really good. We highly recommend topping up for the 3x chocolate in order to get this sinfully delicious richness that you wouldn't really get elsewhere.
For the chocolate, we recommend getting one of the platter sets so that you can try a wide variety of different ones. The Brugse Set or the Praline Set are both great, although you should note that it is by the shop's recommendation of the day, so the selection in it might change. When we went, we had matcha (抹茶, Maccha, Powdered Green Tea), caramel, dark, and white chocolate, and all of them were really delicious.
Most of all, we love the atmosphere of the shop. The building beautifully exposes its wooden architecture, with its dark brown wooden furnishings that give it a wonderful rustic look. It's really a great place to have some afternoon tea to relax after a long day of walking around.
The one downside of the place is that, it is definitely a detour from any major touristy location, but we feel it's worth that extra small detour. After all, it's located right next to an Osaka Metro station, and still within the center of the city.
Ek Chuah's Story
Ek Chuah is a chocolate specialty shop that started in 1986 by chocolatier Uematsu Yoshio (植松秀王), who wanted to bring Europe’s beloved chocolate culture to Japan. However, he wanted to make sure that he integrated Japanese elements and tastes into his chocolate creation, to make it uniquely Japanese.
Named after the Mayan god of chocolate, Ek Chuah, this shop uses only couverture chocolate from Callebaut, a well-respected chocolatier from Belgium that was founded in 1911.
