Wakayama Prefecture is one of the most sacred and spiritual locations in the (関西, Kansai) region, playing host to Mount Koya, famous for its stays, and the Kumano Kodo, one of two UNESCO World Heritage Pilgrimage Routes in the world. Wakayama Prefecture is located on the southern side of the Kansai region, on the west coast of the , and is the least populated prefecture in Kansai.
