Wakayama Prefecture is one of the most sacred and spiritual locations in the Kansai (関西, Kansai) region, playing host to Mount Koya, famous for its temple (寺, Tera) stays, and the Kumano Kodo, one of two UNESCO World Heritage Pilgrimage Routes in the world. Wakayama Prefecture is located on the southern side of the Kansai region, on the west coast of the Kii Peninsula (紀伊半島, Kii Hantō), and is the least populated prefecture in Kansai. Apart from its majestic temples and lush forests, the region is also popular for its coastal views of the Kii Channel (紀伊水道, Kii-suidō), and as a day-trip destination from popular tourist cities like Osaka (大阪, Ōsaka).
