Small City near Tokyo nestled in a National Park and Popular for its Hiking Routes

Nestled within the center of the Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, this city is surrounded by mountains on all sides, making it a prime location for hikers. While the city itself is rather small, it is a great base from which to explore various nearby natural sights.
It has also been the setting of various anime series and films – The anime script writer, Mari Okada, was born in Chichibu and has set multiple of her original works there, including: Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, The Anthem of the Heart, and Her Blue Sky. Fans of these series will be pleased to find merchandise and images of these characters all over the city and its tourist attractions.

Waraji Katsudon at Oshimaya in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture

Waraji Katsu

A large flat piece of tonkatsu (とんかつ pork cutlet) drizzled with sauce, it’s named Waraji Katsu after the waraji (草鞋), a type of straw sandal used in the feudal-era.

This is one of easiest moderate-level hiking routes for those looking to get into nature, but also get a challenging workout. At the top you can also find (三峯神社, Mitsumine-jinja), as well as a shopping street with great food options like the local specialty Waraji Katsu and Miso Potato.

長瀞

Nagatoro

A town near Chichibu, it’s famous for the Nagatoro River that flows through it, and has multiple shopping and food streets to cater to visiting tourists. It’s a great destination for some easy hiking, or taking a traditional boat ride down the river.
