Tokyo's Famous Book Town and Curry Battleground

Plenty of interesting antique book shops
Battleground for Japanese curry shops
Jimbocho is well-loved as Tokyo’s Book Town, filled with almost 200 bookstores in the area, many specializing in second-hand and antique books. Many of these antique bookshops are just small old shops with shelves stacked from floor to ceiling with books. Even if you’re not a book fanatic, the area is still well-worth a stroll.
While most of the bookstores in the area specialize solely in Japanese books, there are a few well-known bookstores that also stock English books. It’s still recommended to check out the antique Japanese book stores, less for the shopping, and more for the beautiful design and experience,

Jimbocho's Story

The area had little to do with books until 1913 when a fire destroyed most of the neighborhood. A local teacher at the then Kanda Girls’ High School (神田高等女学校), Iwanami Shigeo, opened a secondhand bookstore at the ruins of the fire, and he published and sold Natsume Soseki’s, a legendary Japanese author, works which was a great hit at the time. This bookstore lives on today as the publisher, Iwanami Shoten. The success of the bookstore at the time brought academics and university students to the area, and in turn many other second-hand book stores and cafes for reading opened in the area. An urban legend theory states that the area escaped air raids by the US military during World War II because the Americans thought that burning the antique books of Jimbocho would have been a great cultural loss, there is however no actual proof for this theory.
