A retro anime and manga paradise
While Akihabara is the heart of Japan's modern anime (アニメ) and manga (漫画) culture, Nakano Broadway is the retro equivalent. An interesting visit, even for those not interested in anime and manga, this aging mall feels like a slice of the 1980s with its aging mall interior.
Across the many floors, you can find many small indie shops, as well as large spaces owned by the second hand goods giant, Mandarake. There are old figurines, model cards, model trains, movie posters, and much of Japan's pop culture past throughout the mall. Most interestingly, there are also shops that sell keyframes, drawings that form the basis of animation, from older anime series as well.

A hole in the wall eatery serving up handmade Sanuki Udon (讃岐うどん), this shop serves up a tasty clear broth, chewy noodles, and crispy tempura. Said to be founded by a former animator at Studio Ghibli (スタジオジブリ, Sutajio Giburi), you can find a cute illustration of Totoro at the shop.
