Tsukemen Gonokami Seisakusho is a popular ebi (海老, Prawn)-broth tsukemen (つけ麺, Dipping noodles) shop in Shinjuku (東京, Tōkyō) that really embodies the full-bodied taste of the ebi. The shop's motto is "do you want to try drinking prawn?" (海老を飲んでみませんか?, ebi wo nondemimasen ka?). The tsukemen's dipping sauce is very highly concentrated with the taste of the prawn, and so prawn lovers will absolutely love this bowl of noodles.
Tsukemen Gonokami Seisakusho Shinjuku Review and Thoughts
Recommended
Whether or not you like Tsukemen Gonokami Seisakusho comes down to whether or not you like the strong "fishy" taste of prawns. Like the taste of the meat inside the prawn head, that has a strong seafood taste to it, that some love and some consider as being too "gamey". That's the single defining factor, as the entirety of the broth just tastes like the inside of the prawn head.
Our 3/5 rating is then very subjective, because we recognize the richness and concentratedness of the prawn stock that some might like, and yet, we ourselves, hate that particular smell. And so for us, when we visited, we couldn't actually finish the entire bowl cause it was just too overwhelmingly pungent. However, this is definitely a very personal and subjective review of the shop. In general, we love the taste of prawn, but this is the meat of the prawn that is typically lightly sweet, as opposed to the head which is much "gamier".
Yet, the shop definitely has a really long queue over the years, and so if you love the gamey taste of prawn, you should really head down to check it out and try it for yourself. If you hate the gamey taste of prawn, don't end up like what we did, and tapped out after struggling 20% agains the bowl of noodles.
