Tsukiji Market

Tokyo's World Famous Seafood Market

Operating Hours

10:00 to 14:00 (Sun-Wed)

04:00 to 14:00 (Thu-Sat)

Tsukiji Fish Market was the world’s largest wholesale and seafood market until 2018, when the wholesale inner market shifted to a new location at Toyosu Market (including the famed tuna auction). The outer market, which consisted of food stands and restaurants where most tourists visited still remains untouched today.
Tsukiji is still a highly recommended location to get some light snacks like , , and other delicious food items. It’s nice to stroll through the area, take in the bustling area, and get some food in your tummy, and the outer market remains mostly unchanged since before the shift of the inner market to Toyosu.

Tsukiji Market's Story

Interestingly, the market was only previously relocated to Tsukiji in 1935, and was designed to easily facilitate freight trains passing near the market and for seafood to be easily distributed to the rest of Japan.
Originally, Tokyo’s fish market was located at the Nihonbashi area since the selling seafood to the and locals.
After the in 1923 that destroyed the market, the decision was taken to shift to a new area given that Nihonbashi was becoming part of Tokyo’s business district.
Once again, this cycle repeated and Tsukiji Market was shifted to Toyosu at the waterfront district in 2018, as the current land that Tsukiji Market sits on is considered prime real estate given its proximity to the city center.
