Around since the 1950s, the Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street (谷中銀座商店街) feels like a page out of the Tokyo of decades gone by.
Yanaka Ginza plays host to around 60 shops, many of which line the central street on both sides. Near the northern side of the street, is the Yūyake Dandan (夕やけだんだん) a seemingly simple set of stairs. However, the view from the top of these steps, let’s you oversee the stairs, the gate marking the entrance of the shopping street, and over the entirety of the street, and this is one of the most iconic photo spots depicting retro Tokyo.
Along the main street, you can find many local street foods, of which the most popular is probably the menchi katsu (メンチカツ, Minced meat cutlet), a minced pork cutlet. Apart from the main street, there are two major side streets that are packed with cool cafes, and a great place to sit down, read a book over a nice hot cup of coffee.
Yanaka's Story
The Japanese locals call it Shitamachi (下町, Lower City) or the lower city, back during the feudal-era when Tokyo was known as Edo (江戸), the city was divided into the Yamanote (山手, High Town) for the higher-class districts and the Shitamachi for the lower-class districts. Today, Shitamachi districts are seen as the more retro neighborhoods of Tokyo, while the Yamanote districts are the modern neighborhoods of Tokyo.

Hagiso is an interesting building that touts itself as the “Smallest Cultural Complex”, an old wooden apartment from the 1950s that was refurbished in 2013 to what it is now. Today, it houses a cafe, an art gallery, and a rental event space on the first floor, and on the second floor it houses a hotel, a shop and a design studio. The idea of being the “Smallest Cultural Complex” comes from its roots of being an atelier and share house for the students of the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2004, and prior to that it was a regular wooden apartment built in 1955.
