Best Itineraries to Experience Traditional Japan
Discover Cities with Edo Era Vibes
Japan has long been proud of its modern-meets-tradition image; towering skyscrapers juxtaposed with a kimono (着物, Traditional Japanese Garment)-wearing lady at a shrine.
For visitors to Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō) and Osaka (大阪, Ōsaka), though, one might find the traditional aspect a little lacking. While there are certain districts with an older feel to them, being in a major city with high-rise buildings on each side doesn't exactly allow you to experience such a suspension of belief.
But not to worry – there are plenty of destinations which can truly make you feel as if you've been taken back in time to Japan's Edo (1603-1867, 江戸時代, Edo-jidai) era.
