Myoryu-ji Temple (妙立寺), colloquially called Ninja-dera (or Ninja Temple), is a temple was built with hidden defenses, escape rooms, tunnels, traps and more, in order to allow scouts to escape and inform the castle. As such, the temple has no actual relation to ninjas (忍者), covert spies of the era, and was only nicknamed that for its presence and use of traps.
The temple can only be visited on a guided tour, organized every half an hour and cost ¥1,000. Guided tours are conducted purely in Japanese with no English materials.
Ninjadera (Ninja Temple)'s Story
The Myoruiji Temple is a buddhist temple (寺, Tera) built by the Maeda Clan (前田氏, Maeda-shi), the former rulers of the Kaga Domain (加賀藩, Kaga-han). During the Edo era (1603-1867, 江戸時代, Edo-jidai), the rulers of each region had to obey the central shogun government in Edo (江戸). In order to prevent rebellions, strict building restrictions were imposed on each region. To circumvent this, the Maeda Clan built a temple that would double-up as a secret military outpost, to alert the castle in case of an invasion.
