Most shrines (神社, Jinja) in Japan have the same style of wooden buildings, with torii (鳥居) gates, and traditional Shinto symbols. Oyama Shrine stands out for its unique gate, the Oyama Shrine Shinmon Gate (神門, Shin-mon, lit. heavenly gate), that mixes Japanese, Chinese, and Western architecture.
This gate features a Chinese-style triple curved brick arch on the first floor, wooden plaster on the second floor, and Dutch-style stained glass on the third floor. The third floor was said to also have been used as a lighthouse in the past, and the lightning rod located atop the gate is said to be the oldest in Japan, having been erected in 1875.
Oyama Shrine's Story
The design of the gate is often accredited to a Dutch doctor, Holtman, at the time, however the main Japanese architect for the gate, Kichinosuke Tsuda, had already finished his first plans for the gate before the arrival of Holtman. Holtman is credited with the installation of the lightning rod, as he felt that such a tall building would be susceptible to Ishikawa’s many thunderstorms.
