%Arabica is a unique Japanese homegrown coffee brand that is headquartered in Kyoto. While the brand now has outlets around the world, this particular shop in Arashiyama has a beautifully minimalist design and also overlooks the Katsura River (桂川, Katsura-gawa) and the Togetsukyō Bridge (渡月橋, Tōgetsu-kyō Bridge).
A simple coffee stand, their in-house blend is recommended for its unique fragrance. While coffee aficionados would have their own preferences, for the generic coffee drinker, the Kyoto Latte comes recommended as their signature drink. The Kyoto Latte is a latte that is lightly sweetened, and the flavors of the coffee, milk, and sweetness blends together to produce a sublime taste.
% Arabica's Story
Founded by Kenneth Shoji, a Tokyo-born Japanese who studied in California for University, he was inspired by Starbucks’ rise in California in the 1990s and how they created a new coffee culture and great atmosphere for talking with friends or studying. As the son of the owner of a trading company, he was exposed to different cultures and people from a young age, leading him to question his life goals and his existence after graduation. One of the things he realized was important to him, was having a great cup of coffee each day.
Thus, he founded % Arabica in Kyoto in 2014, that aimed to brew and sell the best coffee possible. He bought a coffee farm in Hawaii, became the sole-exporter of a Japanese roasting machine, and a distributor of one of the most popular espresso machines in the world. Through that, he hoped to grow % Arabica from its flagship store in Kyoto, to locations around the world connected via a love for coffee.
