One of the most popular shops in Kawagoe is Coedo Ohana, an oyakodon (親子丼, Chicken and egg rice bowl) specialty shop. Oyakodon consists of stewed chicken meat topped with egg in a dashi-based sauce on rice. Oyako literally means parent and child – the chicken and egg – get it? Well, it’s a bit morbid, but the oyakodon is one of the classic Japanese donburi (丼, Rice Bowl) dishes alongside the katsudon (カツ丼, Pork cutlet rice bowl) and gyudon (牛丼, Gyūdon, Beef bowl).
Coedo Ohana uses only free-range chickens from Iwate Prefecture that are fed only using herbs, and eggs from chickens that eat an in-house feed blend, that results in beautifully red-colored yolks.
When you dig into the oyakodon and take the first bite, you can feel how heart-warming the dish is. It’s simple, yet presents a complex taste profile, with the plumpness of the chicken meat, the umami of the broth in the sauce, and also the runny eggs that go on top of the rice.
We also recommend getting the tamagoyaki (卵焼き, Sweetened rolled omelette) – with its jiggly texture, it makes for a great side to share. The eggs are beaten and mixed together with the dashi broth, before being cooked like an omelette and rolled up to form its shape.
