Odaiba

Tokyo Bay's Man-made Island w/ a Giant Gundam

Odaiba is a man-made island in , just off Tokyo’s southern waterfront, and is a lifestyle and entertainment district.
The island is currently undergoing a major urban renewal project, and many of its longtime attractions such as the Oedo Onsen Monogatari, Toyota Megaweb, Venus Fort, and TeamLab Borderless have all been permanently closed. That being said, there is still a lot to see on the island, and it’s still worth a visit.
Interestingly, Odaiba was actually initially reclaimed as a number of small islands towards the end of the designed to house cannons to fend off coastal attacks on Tokyo. Daiba (台場) means fort in Japanese, and the island was subsequently reclaimed and redeveloped in the 1900s to become the large island it is today.

The Fuji TV Building is one of the most futuristic and iconic structures in Odaiba, with a large, seemingly floating, sphere in the center known as the Hachitama. With hachi referring to the Japanese word for eight (八), which is seen as a lucky number that represents prosperity and also the shape of the character resembles Mount Fuji. Access to the sphere is open as a ticketed attraction to the public, with an observatory giving a 270 degree view of Tokyo Bay and Odaiba, as well as access to a TV studio where one of Japan’s most popular morning shows is still being filmed.

Miraikan

Operating Hours

10:00 to 17:00 (Wed-Mon)

Closed on Tue

The Miraikan (未来館, literally “Future Museum”), or officially the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, is a modern science museum that is designed for children and adults. Most interestingly, it’s exhibits on robots, androids, and space showcase Japan’s progress in the area, and would be fascinating to even adults. In the past, one of the museum’s most popular attractions was the dancing robot Asimo, unfortunately Asimo retired in 2022, so do be aware of that before going.
