Kurashiki Travel Guide
Hidden Gem with a Beautiful Edo-era Merchant Town Vibe
Kurashiki, which can be translated as “town of warehouses”, is a city in Okayama Prefecture (岡山県, Okayama-ken) with a beautifully preserved merchant town that dates back to the Edo Era (1603-1867, 江戸時代, Edo-jidai). The town is unique in that it surrounds a canal, that is lined with willow trees, and even has traditional boat rides that you can go on. In the preserved area surrounding the canal, you can find a unique mix of traditional Japanese machiya (町家, Traditional wooden townhouse), kura (蔵, Warehouse), and many western-style buildings with large stone columns reminiscent of Greece and Rome.
It’s a great place to feel like you’ve been taken back in time, and the town is full of shops and restaurants that give you a much more laidback and leisurely experience than the hustle and bustle of Kyoto (京都, Kyōto).

The Kurashiki Bikan Historic District is a large historical district that has been preserved to resemble its time as a prosperous merchant town during the Edo-era. In 1642, the town was established around the Kurashiki River and the river was used as a canal to transport goods to and fro the area. Today, you can find a beautiful canal area lined with willow trees, as well as a variety of shopfronts in traditional merchant buildings along the canal.
At Yuurin-an, you can engage in two craft workshops to test your artistic or craft skills. You can either paint a daruma doll, or carve your very own chopsticks.

In the feudal era, the Kurashiki River used to be the main method in which goods were transported in and out of Kurashiki. Getting Around
The primary method of getting around Kurashiki is on foot. The centre of activity for tourists in Kurashiki is the Kurashiki Bikan Historical District (倉敷美観地区, Kurashiki Bikan Chiku), located a 10 to 15 minute walk away from Kurashiki Station. The two are connected via a local covered shotengai (商店街, Shōtengai, Shopping Street) that runs from opposite the station, all the way to Honmachi Dori in the Kurashiki Bikan Historical District. Once there, everything can be explored on foot, and most streets are pedestrianized, with the occasional car passing through.
