Kyoto Station is a large complex with a major department store, large underground shopping malls, and plenty of restaurants and shops in the surrounding area.
The building itself has a unique architecture, with the south side of the building boasting a massive atrium that is 14 floors high. There’s also a glass skyway that cuts across the atrium, 11 floors above ground, and even a rooftop terrace where you can chill and enjoy some great views of the city.

This rooftop garden features a nice cozy green space on the 14th floor of the station building. It’s a great place to sit on a bench and chat with friends, and just rest a bit before or after a train ride. There are also large glass windows that allow you to overlook the station platforms, or out towards the south side of Kyoto.

This futuristic glass and metal walkway, 45m up in the air and 147m long, connects the 7th floor atrium on the station’s west side with the 11th floor of the department store on the east side. It’s a long corridor made of glass where you can walk across admiring both the cityscape, the view from up top, and the futuristic design of the sky way itself.
When at Kyoto Station, one of the best places to stop at is Katsukura, a Kyoto-based tonkatsu (とんかつ, Pork Cutlet) restaurant. For the main, we recommend getting the Rosu Katsu (ロスカツ, Loin Katsu) Set Meal as well as a Chawanmushi (茶碗蒸し, Steamed egg custard) as an appetizer.
