Pudding shops might be quite common across Japan, but Enoshima Pudding sets itself apart by making its pudding with Mugi-kogashi (麦こがし), roasted barley flour. Mugi-kogashi is made by roasting barley, and then stone grinding it down into flour, leaving it full of dietary fibre and minerals. This flour is then mixed with egg yolks, cream, milk and other ingredients to create the pudding.
The result is a smooth pudding texture with the distinct taste of barley and its light roasted fragrance. The puddings are handmade in-house, and use locally sourced mugi-kogashi.

Enoshima Pudding Review and Thoughts

Recommended
There's a reason why many Japanese come to try Enoshima Pudding for the first time when they are in the area, and end up buying back 10 bottles to distribute as souvenirs. It is just that good. Pudding has become the almost ubiquitous souvenir food in every touristy area in Japan. So much so that you typically already know the taste and options available at each shop, and they all start to blend together.
Enoshima Pudding bucks that trend with its unique orzo pudding. You typically think of pudding as this simple and sweet dessert. But the orzo takes it up a notch with that delicious roasted/smokey aftertaste, sort of like how a Creme Brulee accents the taste with its caramelization.
Is it the most amazing and unique dessert we've ever eaten? No. But it's definitely one of the best "touristy" puddings that we've had, and the taste is unique enough that you should try it at least once when you're in the area.
