This two day itinerary takes you through the suburban neighborhoods in the West and Southwest parts of Tokyo. These neighborhoods are often popular hangouts amongst the youths or for a family day out for the locals.
Many of Tokyo's suburban neighborhoods are actually part of urban development projects by the local railway companies, and so you can see different characteristics of different neighborhoods based on the railway company that serves the area.
On the first day, we'll visit the neighborhoods of Futako-Tamagawa (二子玉川, Futako Tamagawa), Jiyugaoka (自由が丘, Jiyūgaoka), and Gakugei-Daigaku (学芸大学) served by Tokyu Corporation. These neighborhoods embody a youthful energetic atmosphere, often packed with Japanese students or young families in these modern livable neighborhoods.
On the second day, we'll visit the neighborhoods of Shimo-Kitazawa (下北沢), Nakano, and Kichijoji (吉祥寺, Kichijōji), served by Odakyu Railway and Keio Corporation. These neighborhoods embody more of a rustic charm to them, a more laidback atmosphere for a more mature crowd.

Highlightsnull
When you first arrive at Futako-Tamagawa Station, you will find yourself surrounded by towering malls and buildings. One of the biggest mixed-use developments, the area doubles as both a business district on the weekdays and a lifestyle district on the weekends.

The neighborhood is highly pedestrianized and is heavily European-inspired, from its benches to streetlights and even facades. It is also extremely family- and pet-friendly, so don’t be surprised to see many furry friends running around or families pushing their kids in strollers.
While Akihabara is the heart of Japan's modern anime (アニメ) and manga (漫画) culture, Nakano Broadway is the retro equivalent. An interesting visit, even for those not interested in anime and manga, this aging mall feels like a slice of the 1980s with its aging mall interior.

Often topping the list of favorite places to live in Tokyo, Kichijoji is popular for being a small microcosm of a city, with its own major park, Inokashira Park, a wide variety of shops and department stalls, a sprawling alley of bars, and of course, a great selection of food.
Day by Day Timeline Overview
Much of Tokyo's southwestern suburbs are served by Tokyu Corporation, and many of the areas along the lines are residential or lifestyle districts that have been developed by the company. As such, many of the neighborhoods embody certain values of youthfulness and family friendly design that can be felt as you explore them.
Futako-Tamagawa (二子玉川, Futako Tamagawa) was envisioned as a fusion between a modern working and lifestyle district. The station is surrounded by shopping malls with office towers above them, and just beside is a beautiful riverside park area.
Todoroki Valley (等々力渓谷公園, Todoriki Keikoku Kōen) is a small neighborhood that features a ravine park, a dense forested area that feels like a natural respite in an urban jungle.
Jiyugaoka (自由が丘, Jiyūgaoka) takes inspiration from the streets of European cities, and you can see this inspiration from the road tiling, the benches and the streetlamps.
Gakugei-Daigaku (学芸大学) feels more like the typical Tokyo suburb, but features a high concentration of cafes in the area.
Going through these areas, will make for a relaxing itinerary for the day, to rest and unwind.
The suburbs to the West of Tokyo tend to have a more laidback rustic charm to them. Shimo-Kitazawa (下北沢) is one of Tokyo's most popular neighborhoods, even being named by Timeout as the "World's Trendiest Neighborhood" in 2022. A low-rise neighborhood filled with hipster shops, and a thrifting paradise.
Nakano feels like a relic from a bygone-era. Nakano Broadway (中野ブロードウェイ, Nakano Burōdō~ei) is the centerpiece of the area, once designed as a luxury shopping complex, today it's a retro anime and manga fan's paradise, with many second-hand goods, old figurines, and even the original storyboards and manuscripts from anime up for sale.
Kichijoji (吉祥寺, Kichijōji) is another popular suburb, particularly for Inokashira Park (井の頭公園, Inokashira Kōen), one of the larger public parks in the Tokyo area. The suburb sprawls far out from the station, with a dense shopping street right beside, and quieter local retail areas further out.
