Ice Cream from Hilo Homemade Ice Cream in Shonan, Kanagawa Prefecture

A Day of Bread, Pizza, and Coffee by the Shonan Coast that even locals dream of

Half-Day Shonan Coffee & Bakes Itinerary

(江ノ島) is often known for its great views and seafood, but it's actually a part of a larger area known as the (湘南, Shōnan) area. Within this quaint rustic area by the coast, away from the bustle of (東京, Tōkyō), you can find many small cafes and bakeries around various nooks and crannies in the neighborhood.
This itinerary takes a little detour to the less-explored towns further down the coastline, and is a perfect morning add-on to an Enoshima adventure – complete with great coffee, tea, bread, dessert, and a seaside walk to burn off the calories!
As public transport is less common in the area, there's quite a bit of walking between locations (at most 30 minute walks), so be prepared to work your legs. Avoid going on rainy days, or the extreme heat of summer. Otherwise, this itinerary should provide for a nice quaint stroll through quiet neighborhoods and by the beach.
To best experience this itinerary, we recommend going on a Friday or a Saturday, so that all of the listed locations will be open.

Lee's Bread (リーズブレッド)

Get your sourdough fix

Lee’s Bread, tucked down a tiny alley beside the train tracks, is a cosy sourdough enclave run by an American lady and her husband. Here, you’ll find old Japanese ladies and families alike buying loaves and loaves of bread; it’s definitely a favourite among locals. While there are some seats available outside, do note that this is mainly a take-out place!

Sip on Swedish teas

Te Handel is right opposite the station, perfect for stopping by before catching your train. It’s a small tea room that resembles a Scandinavian-inspired living room, selling specialty in-house branded tea, as well as home goods, books, music, and more. They also sell a small selection of pastries, and offer takeaway tea.

Green Stamps Coffee (グリーンスタンプコーヒー)

Get a literal hole-in-the-wall pizza

Green Stamps Coffee looks like a typical run-of-the-mill hipster cafe with its deep blue storefront lined with glass windows and warm, wooden interior (that’s also lined with art) – it’s that, but much more! Not only do they have a great selection of beans (and non-coffee drinks) to choose from, they also sell gluten-free bakes, and second-hand vintage clothes! It’s a small place with just a few tables (but also counter seats and bench seats), but very homey.

Hilo Homemade Ice Cream (Hilo Homemade Ice Cream)

Lick some Hawaiian Ice Cream

Hilo Homemade Ice Cream has a really unique, tropical range of the regular flavours – such as coconut, Hawaiian salt, Kona coffee, lilikoi (Hawaiian for passionfruit) – and also seasonal specials like apple cinnamon, pistachio, lemon rare cheese, and kiwi, so look out for those. The ice cream here has a really chewy, stretchy texture that’s really unique, and you can really taste the natural ingredients used in making it. Sit at the benches outside and enjoy your ice cream – you’re sure to want to go back in for more.

Stroll along the coast

Est.

From Hilo Homemade Ice Cream, it’s a short 10-minute walk to the beach at this pin – and if you keep following the coastline, you’ll reach Enoshima (you can’t miss it; it’s the big island with the Sea Candle sticking out, connected to the mainland by a bridge)! While this might seem like a long walk, if the weather’s good, this is a great walk, and a fun opportunity to people-watch – surfer dudes cycling by on their bicycles (surfboards mounted!), ojii-sans and high-school students alike lying along the stone steps leading down to the beach, people collecting trash, children running around…
If you get tired, just sit down and take a break on the steps along the beach. Warning, though – it isn’t exactly recommended to eat or picnic along this beach unless you’re really careful, because some rather aggressive hawks circle the beach, as well as the rest of Enoshima; eat at your own risk!

Mellow Bake (Mellow Bake)

Bite into moist and soft muffins

Mellow Bake used to be part of a cafe in Enoshima, but that cafe closed down and the baker’s started her own store along the river. The store’s slightly hard to find – you walk down the river, and have to pass through a gap in the bushes down the stairs to what seems like a house but is… actually a storefront filled with the most delicious-looking bakes. There’s a good video on their Instagram on how to access it, so check that out if you’re nervous; otherwise, the Google Maps pin works just as well.
