Hilo Homemade Ice Cream's Unique Points (こだわり, Kodawari)
The shop prides itself on using high-quality natural ingredients, without artificial additives like fragrance or colour, and making its ice cream fully by hand – you can watch them make the ice cream in-store too! Mainly made out of milk and fresh cream from Hokkaido, the ice cream also does not use eggs, in consideration of those allergic to eggs in Hawaii.
Hilo Homemade Ice Cream's Story
Hilo Homemade Ice Cream was first founded as a wholesale natural ice-cream maker in the 1970s by a Japanese-American couple in Hawaii, and later opened its first store in Keaukaha, the island’s only lava beach. In 1997, the current owner in Japan apprenticed with the fourth-generation ice cream maker, and taking over as the fifth-generation until he returned to Japan in 2005; a new sixth-generation owner took over in Hawaii, and so Hilo Homemade Ice Cream uniquely exists in both Tsujidō, and Hawaii. Apart from their main store, they continue to supply ice cream wholesale all across Japan, to restaurants, and also beauty salons!
