The Yuki no Otani, often colloquailly called the Tateyama-Kurobe Snow Wall or Snow Corridor, is arguably the most iconic view of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a tall ice wall that is typically 7m tall, and can go up to 20m tall in years with heavy snowfall. The Yuki no Otani is at its tallest when the route just opens in mid to late April. The snow wall becomes progressively shorter as the year goes on, and in some years, you can still see some snow even in July or August.
The Yuki no Otani is formed simply from clearing the snow off the road in order to let the Tateyama Highland Bus pass through from Murodo Terminal to Bijodaira Station. Since the snow naturally piles up between 7m to 20m, simply digging a path through the snow creates this incredible sight.
Must Visits in Yuki no Otani (Snow Wall / Corridor)
Most popularly, there is a 500m walking route from Murodo Terminal along the Tateyama Highland Bus road that goes right in the middle of the Yuki no Otani. You will often find people drawing words and pictures into the snow walls along the way, and there is usually a photo spot where the snow wall is at its highest. The walk is also usually a one-way trip, with a return journey on the outside of the wall where you can observe the beautiful valleys of Murodo (室堂).
Optional Stops in Yuki no Otani (Snow Wall / Corridor)
Apart from just viewing the snow wall, there are typically a variety of activities available in April and May depending on the year. Most commonly you can find snow sledding, and even a snow restaurant or cafe available. At the snow restaurant, you can dine out atop the slopes, gazing at the panoramic views of the snow-covered valleys of Murodo while indulging in some drinks or food.
