Yuurin-an is a cafe located in a ko-minka (古民家) that is more than a 100 years old. The cafe focuses on serving up local ingredients, food and drinks, to give visitors a taste of Kurashiki and Okayama.
The popular star of the shop might actually be the Tamago Kake Gohan (卵かけご飯, Rice topped with egg), this popular Japanese breakfast dish is usually served in homes, and uncommonly found in restaurants. The shop also offers two main lunch sets: a Buta Niku Shabu Shabu Don (豚肉のしゃぶしゃぶ丼, Wild Boar Shabu Shabu Rice Bowl) and a Tai no Ohitsu Gohan (鯛のおひつごはん, Sea Bream served with rice in an Ohitsu, a small wooden container). Both lunch sets have limited numbers per day, and tend to sell out by the early afternoon. There are also two popular desserts, the Shiawase Pudding (幸せプリン, lit. Happiness Pudding) and the Panna Cotta.
Yuurin-an's Story
The name Yuurin (有隣) is taken from the teachings of Confucius, where it means that a virtuous person is always surrounded by other virtuous people.
Yuurin-an Menu Recommendations
卵かけご飯
Tamago Kake Gohan
¥700
This dish might be the simplest and most classic Japanese breakfast dish, yet there is just something really addictive about it. All the ingredients: the eggs, the tamago (卵, Egg), and the shoyu (醤油, Shōyu, Soy Sauce) are refillable and sourced from within Okayama Prefecture.
The idea is simple, you crack some eggs into a bowl and beat them, scoop some rice in, pour some of the special soy sauce on it, and voila, your dish is done! It’s extremely simple, yet, so satisfying and flavorful to eat. You can also add in some tenkasu (天かす, Tempura bits) and furikake (ふりかけ).
If you’re worried about eating raw eggs, fret not! Japan has very strict food safety regulations, so strict that it is actually safe to consume raw eggs as the bacteria levels in these eggs are extremely low. Don’t try to do this in other countries unless their eggs are certified safe for raw consumption though.
豚肉のしゃぶしゃぶ丼
Pork Shabu Shabu Don
¥1,850
Includes a choice of dessert and drink.
In Niimi, in the northern part of Okayama Prefecture, there have been increasing incidents of damage and injury from wild boars. This menu item was thus developed to help with this issue, through legal and humane hunting, and make wild boar meat tasty.
Yuurin-an works together with a hunter in Niimi, who has over 30 years of experience, to properly prepare the meat after hunting in order to remove the gamey smell and taste that is usually present in wild boar meat. The result is really soft meat that doesn’t have any gamey taste.
For those looking for a more meaty lunch, this is a great choice. The seasoned raw egg with soy sauce that comes with it matches really well with the meat and the rice.
鯛のおひつごはん
Tai no Ohitsu Gohan
¥1,850
Includes a choice of dessert and drink.
For those looking for a healthier option, fresh tai (鯛, Sea Bream) that is caught in the Okayama Prefecture is served on a bed of rice. The dish can be eaten two ways: raw and as an ochazuke (お茶漬け).
幸せプリン
Shiawase Pudding
¥400
A popular menu item throughout Kurashiki, you will be given a small note paper when you receive this dessert. The idea behind it is to write one thing that made you happy that day, or your happy emotions as you dig into the Shiawase Pudding. Then, two weeks after, to open this same note and read it, in order to re-live your “happiness”. Sort of like, a letter to yourself in the future, or a time capsule!
If ordered ala carte, it needs to be ordered with a drink. Most of the sets in the shop come with it as a choice of dessert.
桃ジュース
Peach Juice
¥600
The most popular drink on the menu, you can get this along with any of the drink sets for lunch or with desserts. In Japan, Okayama Prefecture is most famous for its peaches. So you should definitely try the peach juice here, which is sweet and tasty.
Interestingly, the peach juice is also shaped in a peach butt shaped glass (you’ve seen the emoji), and each glass is handcrafted by a local female craftsman who designed it. If you like the glass, you can also purchase one from the shop next doors!
