What sets Zuicho apart is how umami-packed the donburi (丼, Rice Bowl) is, despite its simple nature. The tonkatsu (とんかつ, Pork Cutlet) is fried to a delicious crisp, and topped with the ultimate savory umami sauce that goes perfectly well with the egg and the rice. You just can’t help but want more! We recommend getting the large portion of rice, otherwise you might find yourself out of rice before finishing the toppings on the dish – it's just that good.
A popular hole-in-the-wall joint known to locals. Coming during the lunch rush means a long queue of salaryman looking to get their lunch fix, so head on right before opening time to avoid the queue, as there are only 8 seats in the shop.
Katsudonya Zuicho Review and Thoughts
Recommended
If you could choose to eat only one dish in Shibuya, or heck, even Tokyo, this should be it. Katsudon (カツ丼, Pork cutlet rice bowl) is a pretty common dish in Japan, but no other restaurant serves anything remotely close to what Zuicho offers. The thing that probably brings the entire dish together, is that amazing tare (たれ, Sauce) that they pour on top of the bowl.
The perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness of the sauce is an appetite enhancer, making every bite of the dish taste that much better. Sure the dish has egg, rice, and tonkatsu (とんかつ, Pork Cutlet), but without the sauce, the dish is really nothing. Sure the tonkatsu is nice and crisp, and the batter is well-done, but the combination of the tonkatsu with the amazing tare really makes it a katsudon unlike any other. There's really no words we can use to describe how good this sauce is without you tasting it for yourself.
Zuicho used to be a relatively hole-in-the-wall secret in Shibuya, only with long lines of salaryman around lunchtime. After all, it's a pretty decent walk from Shibuya Station. Sadly, since catching the eye of the tourists, you can expect a pretty long snaking queue at the shop.
Your order is taken in the queue, and served up almost immediately when seated, and yet, the speed still can't keep pace with the sheer amount of customers that they have. We recommend going early before they open in order to get ahead of the queue, or to head down late in the day before they close. Zuicho mainly only opens for lunch, except for Saturdays where they are also open for dinner.
Katsudonya Zuicho Menu Recommendations
カツ丼
Katsudon
¥1,500
There is only a single dish on Zuicho's menu, Katsudon (カツ丼, Pork cutlet rice bowl), a fried pork cutlet topped with egg and sauce then served on a bowl of fluffy rice. You only have two choices, your portion of rice (small, medium, large), and whether you want a double portion of egg on your katsudon for an additional ¥100.
