Miyashita Park is probably our favourite place to hang around in Shibuya, mainly because it isn't as super overcrowded as other locations in Shibuya. It is by no means empty, but because the mall itself is so large, it diffuses the crowd across the various floors and levels.
We're also partial towards it because Valley Park Stand on the top floor is one of our favourite remote work cafes in Tokyo, so it's a place we often visit, especially since it opens late into the night.
The architecture of the mall is also really cool, mixing air-conditioned retail areas with outdoor open-air portions, as well as that park atop the entire building.
The mall, officially called Rayard Miyashita Park, is actually part of a series of Rayard malls across Japan that have been repurposing boring regular public parks into these modern mixed-use lifestyle and retail complexes. It's really a very fascinating building to see and explore.
There are also plenty of fashion shops and some souvenir shops on the second floor where you can check out a variety of souvenirs that you could buy back. Sadly, the Kitkat Chocolatory that was on the 2nd floor closed down during the COVID pandemic, as that was one of the main draws for tourists in the mall.
The selection of food in the food court is also rather disappointing as it mainly consists of fast food chains like McDonalds, Taco Bell, and Panda Express, rather than offering up a selection of unique Japanese dishes. The thought process might be for these fast food shops to cater to the Japanese youths who patronize the mall often.
There is also the Shibuya Yokocho located on the first floor, while it does seem attractive to foreigners with that izakaya (居酒屋, Japanese pub)-like vibe. We do feel like the place is a bit of a tourist trap, or even salaryman (サラリーマン, Sarariiman) trap, as the food is definitely priced higher than other comparable places, while the food quality is also not as good. Definitely, if you're looking to experience the atmosphere, you might want to try it out, but otherwise, you can definitely find better food options elsewhere in Shibuya.
