Yakiniku (焼肉, Japanese barbecue) can be quite an expensive meal choice in Japan depending on the cuts of meat available, but Futago has a good balance between cost and quality.
Unlike many yakiniku restaurants where you grill the meat yourself (and run the risk of overcooking the meat), at Futago, the staff will offer to cook the meat for you. If you’ve not tried wagyu (Japanese beef) before, we highly recommend getting the Kuroge Wagyu (黒毛和牛, Kuroge Wagyū) Kalbi (カルビ, Karubi, Short rib), a beautifully marbled 250g cut of rib. Do note that you need to reserve this before hand, but rest assured you will not be disappointed. The mark of excellence for wagyu is its marbling, which results in a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture, that will always leave you wanting more.
It’s also typically common for such shops to either charge you an otoshi (お通し) (a mandatory appetizer charge) or a one-drink policy (ワンドリンク制, Wan Dorinku Sei) (having to order at least one drink per person), Futago instead charges a 5% service fee on your bill. This typically costs less than a typical otoshi or a single drink.
Yakiniku Futago Shibuya's Unique Points (こだわり, Kodawari)
Yakiniku Futago's focus is on "dining as a form of entertainment, Futago-style" (食のエンターテイメントふたごすたいる, shoku no entāteinmento Futago sutairu). Their menu focuses on horumon (ホルモン, Innards) that is fresh and has been carefully prepared to bring out the best of its taste. Rather than focusing on serving large expensive portions, Futago prides itself on serving things at half the portion, and half the price, so that customers can eat a wider variety of dishes, instead of stuffing themselves on one. In order to ensure that customers get to enjoy the meat at its best, the meat is also cooked at the table by the staff. They jokingly say that "the level of cooking service they provide, is all the way up till the mouth" (料理の提供はお口まで, ryōri no teikyō ha o-kuchi made).
There are six core principles that Yakiniku Futago sticks to:
- High-quality meat that is specially selected is served at half the quantity and half the price
- Food service is from cooking, all the way to the mouth
- Yakiniku isn't a way to "reward yourself", but a part of everyday life
- By serving up fresh horumon dishes, the chance of a customer becoming a regular patron goes up 120%
- Their shop's specialty: the Kuroge Wagyu Kalbi
- A yakiniku and horumon experience that delights the five senses
Yakiniku Futago Shibuya Review and Thoughts
Recommended
Yakiniku Futago is a great place if you want to get that local yakiniku (焼肉, Japanese barbecue) experience. Not a high-end upscale restaurant, but an almost izakaya (居酒屋, Japanese pub)-like ambience where every day people come after work to eat good food and be merry. Staff are cheering all around you, people are chatting loudly over their drinks, and there's a nice bustling atmosphere that's almost electric. We should note that rowdiness doesn't mean unsafe, Japan's an extremely safe country, and when people are merry and loud, they usually make sure to keep their jolliness to their own groups. So you don't have to worry about feeling intimidated or dealing with other problematic customers.
Yakiniku Futago's signature dish is their Kuroge Wagyu (黒毛和牛, Kuroge Wagyū) Hamideru Kalbi, an extremely huge 250g rib steak that just protrudes off of your grill. The meat is extremely well-marbled and melts in your mouth, and it's one of the most value-for-money things to get at Yakiniku Futago. Do note that this dish needs to be ordered over reservation, but you could try your luck in-store if you want to.
Another popular dish is the Hamidetai Harami, a delicious cut of skirt steak that has been marinated over a long period of time with a sweet-spicy marinate. It's a massively long cut of skirt steak, and just watching it cook on the grill makes you drool. The meat is also really soft and tender, and the staff cut it up into bite-sized chunks so that it's easier for you to eat.
Yakiniku Futago is really the place to go if you're looking for the "everyday man's" yakiniku shop. The shop's bustling atmosphere full of salaryman (サラリーマン, Sarariiman) after their day of work, and staff yelling out orders in unison, it's really an experience all by itself. The wide variety of meats served is also very much catered to the local "commoner" taste and gives you an off-the-beaten path local experience.
Whatsmore, if you enjoy drinking alcohol, they offer a wide variety of drinks on the menu, including the popular, Special Lemon Sour (サワー, Sawā, Sour Cocktail), a popular drink at all yakiniku establishments.
Bonus Tip: If you’re interested in getting something to drink, and want to test your luck, then how about trying out the Saikoro (サイコロ, Dice) Challenge? It's a popular dice game at Japanese drinking spots that brings risk or reward for your drink. Pick a drink from the selection, then roll a pair of dice. If you roll both a 2 and a 5 (in Japanese, this is the name of the shop), then your drink is free. If your total roll is an even number, then your drink will be half-priced, if it is an odd number, there will be no change, and if you roll double 1s, your drink shrinks to a smaller cup. So in general, your odds are pretty good at getting something better than what you ordered, but of course, do this at your own risk!
Yakiniku Futago Shibuya's Story
Yakiniku Futago was founded by two twin brothers, futago (双子) means twins, in Tokyo in 2010, and today has more than 100 branches around the world. The two brothers, Lee Sun Bong and Lee Sun Chol, were born in Osaka, of Korean descent, and grew up in a poor environment. They decided to start a shop together as they felt it was difficult for them to make it in a white-collar environment, and they wanted to start a sustainable business to make life easier for their mother, who used to run a yakiniku shop. As children, they were very inspired by the hard-working figure of their mother, who often skipped her meals so that the two of them could eat. While it wasn't easy going for them at the start, almost going out of business in the first six months, the brothers believed that with hard work and passion, they could make their dreams turn into reality.
