551 Horai is a nikuman (肉まん, Steamed meat bun) specialty shop that is one of Osaka's most popular food omiyage (お土産, Souvenir). Most of their stalls are typically takeout stands, selling their butaman, either freshly steamed or in a frozen form.
You'll often find many Japanese in long lines queueing up to buy some, waiting even before the shop opens up.
551 Horai's Story
551 Horai was founded in Namba, Osaka in 1945 by Luo Bang Qiang (羅邦強) and two other friends. The shop's name Horai (蓬莱) was a reference to Taoyuan Township (桃源郷) in Chinese, and the shop was launched as Horai Shokudo (蓬莱食堂, Horai Cafeteria), beginning with selling curry rice (カレーライス, Karē Raisu) and then selling their butaman for the first time in 1946.
Eventually, the three founders split and pursued their own business individually, with Luo Bang Qiang leading up Horai by himself. In 1974, in order to make the shop's name more catchy, it was renamed to 551 Horai. Luo Bang Qiang inspired by the cigarette he was smoking, with the brand "555", where he realized that simple numbers were easy to remember. Additionally, the shop's phone number at the time was 64-551, and so he decided to rename the shop to 551 Horai.

The signature item at 551 Horai is their Butaman, a steamed bun with buta niku (豚肉, Pork) and diced tamanegi (玉ねぎ, Onion) inside. The bun's skin is thick and fluffy, and there is a sizeable chunk of meat in the center that is well-seasoned and juicy.
The buns are made fresh each day, using the same recipe and method from when they were first sold in 1946.
